Suspicious Minds: Andrew Tift UK Portrait Artist

ARTISTS STATEMENT

Andrew has been working as a figurative realist artist, specialising in portraiture, for nearly 30 years. His work is incredibly detailed and intense spending hundreds of hours creating each painting or drawing. He won First Prize in the BP Portrait Awards at the National Portrait Gallery, London with his portrait of Lucian Freud’s first wife, Kitty, at the most prestigious portrait painting competition in the world. Some of his commissions have included such famous people as Tony Benn, Neil and Glenys Kinnock, Lord Carrington, Eric Sykes, Cormac McCarthy, Ken Livingstone, Noddy Holder, and Lord Chief Justice Woolf. But Andrew also enjoys sourcing his own interesting sitters from as far afield as Japan and America to his native Black Country.

Andrew’s paintings are featured in many Public and Private collections. These include The National Portrait Gallery - London, The Smithsonian Museum - Washington D.C., The Palace of Westminster - London, Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery - Birmingham, New Art Gallery, Walsall, The Frissiras Museum- Athens, The Roberto Polo Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art - Madrid and many other institutions. He also has group and solo exhibitions at museums and galleries throughout the world. In 2018 Andrew had a major retrospective exhibition at the prestigious New Art Gallery, Walsall - one of the finest publicly funded contemporary Art galleries outside of London. In 2019 Andrew was commissioned, in conjunction with The Royal Collection Trust, The Arts Council and Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens to make a series of new drawings to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Leonardo Da Vinci’s death. Andrew’s drawings were exhibited alongside Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings from The Royal Collection”
